This game provides practice with number comparison. While Oldfield describes a Math game as a challenge between opponents I personally do not believe that we have to be competing with anyone for something to be considered a game. This game reinforces the concept being taught while allowing students to move at their own pace. The activities are not timed so students can take as much time as needed to figure out what is the correct response.
The game is structured in such a way that multiple methods of doing the same problem are presented. Students can use the numberline or the place value chart or just look at the numbers at face value and decide whether the numbers are greater than, equal to or have a lesser value than the other. It provides positive reinforcements for right answers and offers a non-judgemental response to try again if the wrong answer was entered.
You are able to interact with some aspects of the game without actually signing up. You can choose the Grade level and the topic you want to work with. The topics are aligned with NYS Common Core Standards and the website presents itself as free for children, parents and educators. Signing up is easy as you can simply use your Google account. Once you sign up you can choose your child’s or children’s Grade level and topic you want them to start with; both of which can be changed at any time. You can choose to sign up as an educator or as a parent. However, once you sign up a prompt comes up redirecting you, once you click to get your child started, to sign up for your free 7 day trial and a list of options as to monthly or yearly pricing comes up. I find that very misleading and honestly a turn off for me even though the monthly prices do not seem that high. I believe in companies who are honest and upfront at the get go.
This game however is engaging and interactive. Students click and drag the answers to the prescribed location and you get immediate feedback. I believe that students can definitely benefit from interactions with this game as it provides a visual representation of the concepts and I have always believed that Math is a visual subject. Once you can see what the person is talking about it makes understanding the Mathematical Language so much easier.
